Advantages of LASIK

There is less post operative discomfort, compared with other refractive techniques, as the surface of the cornea remains intact.

The recovery process is fast. Many patients see immediate improvements in vision and most are able to resume normal activities, including driving, 1-2 days later.

Surgical advancements mean that an even wider number of refractive errors can be treated successfuly with LASIK.

Disadvantages of LASIK

The flap is made with an instrument called a microkeratome. Occasionally the flap may be imperfect, in which case the operation would have to be postponed until the flap healed.

The flap can also be subject to damage or infection after the operation. To avoid this patients should adhere to post op instructions.

LASIK - Laser in situ keratomileusis

LASIK is now the most widely performed corrective procedure and it has been performed since the mid 1990's. Most types of refractive error may be corrected with this procedure although those with thin corneas or very high corrections may be unsuitable.
